Make use of the new digital Vietnam visa
On 1 February 2017, Vietnam introduced an electronic e-visa to slowly phase out the old visa on arrival. Unlike the Vietnam visa on arrival, the e-visa is granted before departure. Travellers can therefore avoid waiting in the stamping fee queue at the airport. All costs are included in the total price of £49.95 per person. The e-visa is cheaper, easier to apply for and saves a lot of time at the airport compared to the old visa on arrival.
What is the Vietnam visa? The visa for Vietnam is a travel authorisation for travelling to Vietnam. All travellers are required to possess their own visa; this includes children. Vietnam allows citizens from certain countries, including the United Kingdom (but not Ireland), to stay in Vietnam for 15 days without a visa. However, if you plan on staying longer than 15 days, you will require a visa. Submitting an online application is the easiest way to meet this requirement. After approval, the visa will be sent to you digitally by e-mail; you only need to print it and take it with you on your trip for a comfortable journey to Vietnam.
Warning Vietnam Visa on Arrival
The Vietnam embassy warns: do not make use of the visa on arrival. Many travel agencies still advertise the visa on arrival, even though the embassy strongly discourages this method. The visa on arrival was until recently the most commonly used method to travel to Vietnam. To do this, an approval letter had to be purchased before departure for roughly £20 and another stamping fee of $25 to $50 had to be paid at the airport in Vietnam. The embassy can no longer guarantee that travellers with the visa on arrival can get past the passport check without trouble.
Take note: many travel agencies claim to be able to arrange a Vietnam visa for you, even though they can only arrange an approval letter for the visa on arrival. In this case, you will still need to wait in line and pay extra costs after arrival in Vietnam. That is why it is better to make use of the visa for Vietnam on this website.
Validity term and Vietnam visa requirements
To be able to travel to Vietnam, you need to keep a number of requirements in mind. During the application process, you indicate when the visa will be valid. An exact date of arrival or departure date is not necessary yet. You also do not need to have booked transportation (flight, cruise ship or bus/coach) at this moment. You can enter and leave Vietnam once, and only at the locations which you fill in on the form. Your entire stay in Vietnam (including the day you are travelling in and out of the country) must fall within the validity term of 30 days. You are required to have established at least one place to stay at the moment of your application for the visa. You also need to meet the requirements below:
- You must possess the Vietnam visa before starting your journey
- Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the expiry date of your visa
- You cannot have a mental illness or transmittable disease which can pose a threat to your direct environment
- You cannot have been deported from Vietnam in the past 3 years
- You can only arrive and depart from one of these designated airports, seaports, or border posts
