Explanation Indian visa
Applying for an Indian visa is necessary for all British and Irish travellers to India. This applies to tourists as well as business travellers, but also to minors. Applying for an Indian visa online has been possible for a few years now. After approval, the document is sent as a PDF file by e-mail. It does not need to be stamped in the passport at the embassy.
Which visa type do I need? Tourists can make use of the so-called “eTourist visa”, business travellers of the “eBusiness visa” and medical travellers of the “eMedical visa”. These are all electronic visas, also known as “e-visas”, which can be acquired quickly and easily through the online application form. You can submit an Indian visa application here in a matter of minutes.
Changed validity terms of the e-visa India: From 6 October 2021, the validity period of tourist visa for India has changed. The new validity period is 120 days from the time your visa application is approved. Within this period you may travel to India once for a maximum stay of 30 days.
Visa requirements when applying online
The Indian government maintains certain requirements for all visa types, which travellers are expected to observe. This also applies to the online variants; the eTourist, eBusiness or eMedical Indian visa. The most important requirements are summed up below.
With regard to travel plans:
- Arriving by plane is only allowed at the airports of: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Calicut, Chennai, Chandigarh, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gaya, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Port Blair, Pune, Tiruchirapalli, Trivandrum, Varanasi and Vishakhapatnam.
- Arriving by boat or cruise ship is only allowed at the ports of: Chennai, Cochin, Mormugao (at Goa), New Mangalore (at Mangalore) and Mumbai
- Leaving India is allowed anywhere that has an Immigration Checkpost. This includes all international airports, all seaports where you can arrive, and includes the border with Nepal, at Banbasa, Gauriphanta, Jogbani, Rani Gunj, Raxaul, Rupaidiha and Sonouli.
- In the north-most point of India (to the north and east of Bangladesh) are several regions with special restrictions. These include: Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
- It is permitted to change the date and location of arrival/departure after applying for the visa, provided the new data meets the visa requirements and falls within the validity period.
On arrival in India, it is required that:
- the passport that was used during the visa application is still valid for at least six more months
- this same passport needs to be handed over, along with the printed Indian visa
- the traveller can provide a return or transit ticket
When is an e-visa not sufficient?
Tourists that want to stay in India for longer than 30 consecutive days and business travellers with travel plans lasting longer than 180 days, cannot make use of the e-visa India. The same holds for travellers that want to study in India, perform volunteer work or enter into employment with an Indian organisation. They can make use of the alternative procedure, whereby the visa is stamped directly in the passport at the embassy. The costs in that case are higher, and the application takes more time. Read more about this on the page concerning the physical Indian visa.
Indian visa application
Getting an Indian visa online can be done 24/7 through this website. A choice can be made between the “eTourist”, “eMedical” or “eBusiness” variant. Through the online application form, you can submit an Indian visa application for yourself and/or other travellers. Applying takes about ten minutes. The total fees of £19.95 per person can be paid for safely and reliably through Visa, MasterCard, American Express or PayPal. The Indian visa is sent by e-mail within one week (view example). It is important to print this document in colour, in A4 format, and keep it with the passport during the trip.
Normal delivery or urgent application
Are you already travelling to India in a few days? Then it is recommended having the application processed with urgency. Submitting an urgent application can be done through the normal Indian visa application form, by checking the “urgent delivery” option. On average, visas that were applied for with urgency are granted within three working days. Due to manual checking and processing of all applications, delivery times can never be guaranteed, even when urgent.
Get started on your application. Are you planning to travel to India? Then you can start your visa application right away. Because the Indian visa is valid for 120 days, it is not necessary to know the exact dates of arrival and departure. However, at least one accommodation address must already be known, as this will be asked for in the application form.
